Amanzi Ethu
What is Amanzi Ethu?
Amanzi Ethu addresses the critical challenge of limited access to portable water faced by many rural communities in South Africa. This initiative focuses on supportive grandmothers raising children by installing hydro panels in households to ensure access to clean drinking water. By reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and alleviating the physical burden of water collection on elderly caregivers, Amanzi Ethu aims to improve the health and life outcomes of grandmothers and the children in their care.
In a successful pilot implementation conducted in the OR Tambo District of the Eastern Cape in 2022, 400 Source hydro panels were installed. This impacted two schools in the rural villages of Cutwini (150 panels) and Mthambalala (50 panels), and ninety-eight households across four rural villages (Luphoko - 50 households with 2 panels per house, and Lujazo - 48 households with 2 panels per house) providing over one thousand children with access to clean drinking water at school and within their homes.
Project Aim
Amanzi Ethu empowers grandmothers raising children in under-resourced communities in South Africa by providing access to clean water. Through the installation of hydro panels, the project aims to improve household health, reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, and alleviate the physical burden of water collection, thereby enhancing the independence and well-being of these caregivers.
