Amanzi Ethu
What is Amanzi Ethu?
Access to potable water remains a challenge in many parts of South Africa. Amanzi Ethu aims to support grandmothers raising children in under-resourced rural communities in South Africa by installing hydro panels at households to ensure access to potable water. This improves health and life outcomes of older carers and children through reducing water-borne disease and energy spent by elderly women collecting water.
In a pilot implementation study conducted in the OR Tambo District of the Eastern Cape, 400 Source hydro panels were installed in 2022. Serving 2 schools in the rural villages of Cutwini (150 panels) and Mthambalala (50 panels) and in Luphoko (50 households of two panels per household) and Lujazo (48 households with two panels per household) over 1000 children have access to clean drinking water at school.
Project Aim
To support grandmothers raising children in under-resourced rural communities in South Africa by installing hydro panels at households to ensure access to potable water. The project aims to reduce the risk of water-borne disease, while alleviating the physical burden on elderly women to collect drinking water. This follow-up project aims to build on the success of the pilot implementation, bringing in additional areas.
